![Vertically-oriented Harper’s Magazine advertisement minimalistically depicting a man in a red Beefeater uniform alongside a large column of text against a vibrant red background. The text takes up the right side of the poster, and in a large black serif font contained in an offwhite background the poster reads: [HARPER'S/ is the largest/ and most popular/ MAGAZINE/ yet owing to its/ enormous sale/ and in spite of/ the great expense/ of production,/ the price is/ STILL/ ONE SHILLING]. Underneath the ad copy in a much smaller-sized font text reads: [The Artistic Supply Co. Ltd./ Amberley House W.C./ Printed by Stafford & Co., Netherfield, Nott.m./ Copyrighted in America, 1895.]. On the left side an individual stands with their back mostly to the viewer dressed in a traditional Beefeater (guard of the Tower of London) uniform. They hold a diagonally-angled light brown lance and their black-haired and bearded face is slightly turned to the right in partial profile. The Beefeater is rendered using minimalist shapes in a limited palette of red, black, light beige and light brown: light brown as their skin color, white as small accents of their uniform, black as their hair and as the various outlines of their uniform, and red as the negative space that also serves as the color of their uniform. The figure’s outline is only partially articulated with black lines, such that his body bleeds into the background and is portrayed as a red uniform with black, geometric trimmings. Details of the uniform include: knee-length tunic (skirted jacket cinched at the waist), knee breeches and stockings, a Tudor Bonnet (a round-brimmed flat-topped black hat) with a partial white buckle peeking up from the brim, traditional mens black lace-up dress shoes with outline of a rosette (the Tudor rose), the same outline of the Tudor Rose as knee attachments, and a large white ruff collar. Underneath the Beefeater figure is a signed black [Beggarstaffs] signature at lower left housed in an extension of the ad copy’s off-white background.
