Textile, Arte Musica

This is a Textile. It was designed by Laura Jean Allen and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1955 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Laura Jean Allen, the illustrator known for covers of The New Yorker and for her children’s books, was one of Associated American Artists’ most prolific artists. Her creations ranged from textiles to ceramics, and she often served as the face of AAA in its magazine advertisements. (1)

Arte Musica appears to have been the design highlighted in the July 13, 1955 issue of Women’s Wear Daily: “Among the most versatile designs are those credited to Laura Jean Allen, who has contributed…the ‘Old Music Shop’ of musical instruments framed within rectangles of unusual colors like royal navy against olive drab.” This is one of five of her textile designs being presented for consideration.

Multiple examples of Allen’s work, including garments fashioned from her Sunspots and Imperial Seal prints, are included in the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art’s traveling exhibition, “Art for Every Home: Associated American Artists, 1934-2000.”
