Pair Of Candelabra (Netherlands), 1766

This is a Pair of Candelabra. It was made by Valentijn Casper Bömke. It is dated 1766 and we acquired it in 1926. Its medium is cast, molded, and raised silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was bequest of Mrs. John Innes Kane. It is credited Bequest of Mrs. John Innes Kane.

Symmetrical in composition, this monochrome bronze mount in the shape of two putti angels kissing among curling stems, branches, flowers and leaves. The figures have sharp wings and elongated curling leaves for legs. On either side of the kissing angels is a stylized acanthus plant, the motif mirrored on either side. The leg leaves transition into curls of more leaves with growing branches emerging and eventually curling into whimsical spirals. In the center of one of the spirals is a flower, which is to the immediate right and immediate left of each putti.
