Sidewall (France)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1810–20 and we acquired it in 1928. Its medium is block printed on handmade paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

This wallpaper imitating a woven textile is printed in three colors on a light blue ground. The yellow floral and square anthemia motifs are overprinted with fine lines in a deeper tan color suggesting a weave structure. This technique is frequently employed to suggest a weave with printed color. It became fashionable to drape the walls with fabrics in the early nineteenth century and wallpaper manufacturers were quick to pick up on this trend and there have been numerous wallpaper imitations since that time. The earliest wallcovering in the collection dated ca. 1670 is a canvas block-printed and flocked to simulate a more expensive cut velvet.

This object was donated by Sarah Cooper Hewitt and Eleanor Garnier Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.
