Sidewall (France)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1765–75 and we acquired it in 1928. Its medium is block-printed on handmade paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Domino papers were printed on single sheets of paper by the guild of Dominotiers in France during the 18th century. The original intent of domino papers was for lining trunks and chests of drawers, and they were also used as book end pages. But people saw the decorative aspect of the designs and began pasting them to their walls as they were less expensive and more available than other forms of decoration. These were printed by woodblock with the color accents painted on using stencils. The diamond trellis design printed on this paper is one of the few design formats that have never fallen out of favor for use on walls.

This object was donated by Sarah Cooper Hewitt and Eleanor Garnier Hewitt. It is credited Gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.
