Sample Book (India)

This is a Sample book. It was manufactured by John Philips & Co.. It is dated 1787–1803 and we acquired it in 1936. Its medium is leather, paper, silk, cotton, linen and its technique is woven. It is a part of the Textiles department.

It is credited Gift of Mrs. Samuel S. Walker.

A vertically-oriented textile with a center panel and a wide border on each long side, with geometric forms in shades of blue. The center panel has blue and white check with white threads withdrawn in a pattern of concentric diamonds repeating throughout. The inner diamonds along the center are solid blue, while the remaining are bordered with a lighter shade in the interior. The left and right borders have three blue and white parallel bands that form lines, with the plain weave cloth visible as yellow stripes in between. Each band contains a rotated triangle patterns in dark blue; the effect is almost pinwheel-like.
