Mantle Fragment (Peru)

This is a Mantle fragment. It is dated 8th–10th century and we acquired it in 1956. Its medium is cotton warp, camelid fiber wefts and its technique is plain weave with discontinuous weft (tapestry), single interlock. It is a part of the Textiles department.

It is credited Museum purchase from Pauline Riggs Noyes Fund.

A rectangular weaving with an abstract geometric pattern of small rectanges and an overlying grid in shades of warm and cool tan, brown, grey, and white. The size of the rectangles vary in a pattern that sees no two rectangles of the same size sharing a side; their differnt lengths and widths vary greatly throughout the weaving. The darker-toned rectangles contrasted with the lighter-toned ones create an abstract pixel grid effect on the textile. A warm hue of light brown is the predominant color compared to the strips of gray rectangles throughout the piece.
