Peacock Side Chair

This is a side chair. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and made for (as the client) Imperial Hotel. It is dated 1921–22 and we acquired it in 1968. Its medium is oak, leatherette upholstery. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Wright’s 1913–23 designs for The Imperial Hotel in Tokyo included the décor and furnishings. Used in the hotel’s Peacock banquet room, this chair’s hexagonal back and square seat echoed the building’s Mayan Revival exterior but Japanese design also had a profound influence on Wright’s work.

This object was donated by Tetsuzo Inumaru. It is credited Gift of Tetsuzo Inumaru.

Black and tan desk with side table placed on top of it. Desk consists of two black legs with tan shelves coming off of them to the sides. The top of the desk has a narrow, tan drawer with two black knobs. The top of the desk also has tan shelving coming off both sides of it. On top of the desk is a side table, which also has black legs, with tan shelves coming out of the bottom and top of the legs. In between the desk and table is an orange blotter.

Occuring throughout are feather-like patterns, each one featuring eight teal-green lines clustered together with small red tips at the end of each line.
