Textile, Nucleus

This is a Textile. It was designed by Richard Landis and co-designed by Craig Fuller and woven by Richard Landis. It is dated 1976 and we acquired it in 1978. Its medium is cotton and its technique is double cloth (two interlocked plain weave structures). It is a part of the Textiles department.

Nucleus and Signal are the result of Landis’s only collaborative work, created with graphic designer Craig Fuller. A subtle symmetry is created by precisely repeating the same color sequence in the warp and weft. What may appear a random arrangement of colored squares is a balanced and controlled expression of a well-modulated palette.

It is credited Museum purchase from Friends of Textiles Fund.

A gridded pattern of pixelated shapes depicting various muted tones of cyan, magenta, and yellow. From a distance, the colors seem to combine and become blurry, however at close inspection thin, multicolored threads intertwine to establish the pattern.

A square-shaped weaving with a gradient plaid-like pattern in shades of blue, orange, brown, and grey. The gradience starts at the bottom left of the weaving, fading a series of light blue rectangles to a darker blue, and repeating this again as it stretches to the upper right of the weaving. The colors are all muted and earth-toned.

A square-shaped drawing with an abstract geometric pattern comprised of smaller blue, orange, brown, black, and white squares. Most squares are filled with a checkerboard pattern of two colors save for a few scattered white and black squares filled with simply a checkerboard outline. The drawing is bordered with a muted gray frame.
