Perpetual Calendar Matchsafe

This is a matchsafe. It is dated 1887–88 and we acquired it in 1980. Its medium is silver, enamel, bone, leather case. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by Carol B. Brener and Stephen W. Brener. It is credited Gift of Stephen W. Brener and Carol B. Brener.

Its dimensions are

4.5 x 3.7 x 1 cm (1 3/4 x 1 7/16 x 3/8 in. )

It has the following markings

Illegible mark (possibly "F"), English duty mark, lion passant, city mark (Chester), date letter "D", all stamped on reverse, outside of box, above inscription; 4, L.E, duty mark, date letter "n" in lower case gothic, all stamped on underside of uppermost lid to days of week compartment; PROTECTED No 13518, stamped on underside of match container lid.
