Drawing, Design for a Fountain with the Labors of Hercules

This is a Drawing. It was created by Vincenzo di Raffaello de' Rossi and attributions: Unknown, Pierino da Vinci and Baccio Bandinelli. It is dated 1562 and we acquired it in 1942. Its medium is black chalk on off-white laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. John Innes Kane.

It has the following markings

Collector's stamp in black ink, lower right recto: Joshua Reynolds (Lugt 2364); Cooper Union in purple (Lugt suppl. 457e) lower center verso. Watermark: Star in diamond in circle (Heawood 3875); similar to Briquet 6097 and Woodward 292

It is inscribed

In pen and brown ink at upper right: "Baccio 46" [word and number appear in two different inks and possibly two different hands]; In black chalk to left of globe: "22"; to left of Hercules's right leg: "6"; below fountain bowl, right: "8"; on base, center: "5"; below base at center right: "5".
