Sidewall, Opera

This is a sidewall. It was manufactured by Greeff Fabrics Inc.. It is dated 1953 and we acquired it in 1981. Its medium is screen printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Steinberg’s inspiration for this design was the opera house by architect Charles Garnier which was completed in 1875. Illustrated in signature Steinberg style, the design is fun and whimsical while drawing attention to some of the building’s notable architectural components. The design has been formatted like an arabesque wallpaper of the late eighteenth century, with the elevations connected by beaded swags and the symmetrical elements aligned on a central axis.

It is credited Gift of Mrs. Howard Adams.
