The word 'cafe' is hand written below the drawing. Centrally, located is a person sitting at a round table with a comfortable cat resting on the floor beneath. They are explaining a drawing of a coffee shrub in a large heavy volume to a young child while an older child, wearing a tophat is holding the volume on the left. To the right of the central figure, an animated person pours hot steaming coffee into the cup of a young child as the child faces a taller child to their right, both wearing topcoats while a smaller child to their left wears a long dress and their hands are expressing something. The group at the table is overlapping a wall on a patio and high above is a round relief of a horse facing right with a person and the word “ARABIE” printed on the bottom of the relief. The word could be a reference to a particular bean Coffea Arabica or an Arabian horse. Above and to the left in the distance of the central image is a half moon window known as a lunette above a doorway where a person wearing a long dress is grinding coffee in a conical/inverted conical grinder. To the right of the central group is a person in the distance wearing a long dress using a roaster to roast coffee with billowing smoke emanating while sitting with her back to the right on a stool. The dominant colors used in this drawing are a light tint of reddish brown with exaggerated white reflecting light contrasted with darker grays.

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Jean Charles Develly and company: Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory. It is dated 1819–20 and we acquired it in 1989. Its medium is pen and brown, black ink, brush and brown, black wash, white gouache, red crayon, graphite on tan paper mounted on gray-blue paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Table services were some of the finest objects produced by the royal Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory. This design for a plate with coffee as its subject was one of 36 dishes that illustrated scenes related to the production of foods served for dessert. Figures in the scene engage with coffee in a variety of ways—women in the background grind and roast beans, men inside the house explain the coffee plant’s botany, and women and children pour coffee.
