Panel (France)

This is a Panel. It was produced by Pierre Maille and woven by Pierre Maille. It is dated 1732–40 and we acquired it in 1994. Its medium is bast, wool, cotton, silk and its technique is brocaded to imitate the effect of a type of counted embroidery called "flame stitch.". It is a part of the Textiles department.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Mrs. Florence Mathews.

Warp x Weft: 229 x 244 cm (7 ft. 6 3/16 in. x 8 ft. 1/16 in.)

It is inscribed

One border has the name of the producer repeatedly woven in mirror image, "PIERRE MAILLE."
