Sidewall (USA)

This is a sidewall. It is dated ca. 1910 and we acquired it in 1996. Its medium is block-printed paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Art nouveau paper styled in the manner of earlier aesthetic-style designs. The scrolling floral and foliate motifs create a dense canopy of warm tones and call to mind antique tapestries and rich imported fabrics. The flat styling of the design without highlights or shadows furthers this textile illusion.

It is credited Museum purchase from Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program and Sarah Cooper-Hewitt Funds.
