Sidewall, Arabesque with griffins

This is a sidewall. It was manufactured by Arthur & Robert. It is dated 1789 and we acquired it in 1997. Its medium is block-printed on handmade paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

It is credited Museum purchase from Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program Fund.

A vertical rectangular woven silk panel with a dark chocolate brown ground. A repeating bold pattern of deep orange, tongue-like flames engulfed in swirling, pale gold clouds of columnar, rising smoke covers the surface. There are eight rows, alternating between four large flames and four small flames. The larger flames swirl to the left while the smaller flames swirl to the right. Tiny golden salamanders move among the flames. The flames appear to give off specks of gold dust and to cast pale gold, branch-like shadows.
