Drawing, Textile Design: Anemones, Apple Blossoms, and Narcissi

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Alphonse Maria Mucha. It is dated 1897–98 and we acquired it in 2000. Its medium is brush and watercolor, graphite on cream wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

When writing to his wife in 1910 about his ideal family home in Bohemia, Alphonse Maria Mucha made his desires for living near nature clear: “You know my conditions . . . woods nearby, the town nearby, a garden as big as possible—so that I can build a studio there.” Mucha prioritized access to natural resources
in order to attain a good quality of life and work. His textile designs celebrate the spontaneous freeform curves of flowers and plants.

A vertically rectangular drawing of a lush bunch of flowers and berries. The bottom of the drawing is thick and full, with small red berries, green leaves, small red petals, and other varieties. Moving upward, two big, open flower petals bloom in the center of the piece. In the top third, the bush curls upward, starting on the right and eventually folding over on the left side, resembling a vine-like shape.

A black cast-iron balcony railing with two symmetrical, ornamental panels. Two sinuous, curving bars of iron drop down from the center top of each panel and curve into a looping, oblong design towards the bottom, joined by two additional curving bars that snake towards the center bottom from each side of each panel.
