Folding Chair (USA)

This is a Folding chair. It was manufactured by Edward W. Vaill. It is dated 1863–75 and we acquired it in 2001. Its medium is carved, joined and turned wood or mahogany, woven wool upholstery, metal tacks. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This chair is a variation on a model patented in 1863 by Edward W. Vaill, one of the most prominent American patent chair manufacturers of the period. This chair’s functional folding frame is enhanced with a fashionable upholstery featuring a scrolling vine motif, suggestive of de Forest’s woodwork, which made it equally well-suited for use in a middle-class dining room or parlor.

A collapsible wheelchair wheel in its folded form on a gray background. It is made out of glass-reinforced nylon and aluminum. The parts, in its compacted form, creates an oval shape with a figure eight in the center. The wheel is in black with an aluminium swivelling support, located diagonally in the middle. Each half of the wheel is composed of two arching parts, one on top of the other, outlining the perforated rim.

This black and gray wheelchair wheel is made of nylon and aluminum. Around the rim is a raised handheld bar surrounding a collapsible 'x' frame spoke. A gray bar with rounded ends runs through the center and is attached by a large circular cap, holding the frame and bar together. Behind the central bar sits the 'x' frame spoke, designed with geometric, symmetrical cut outs and four metal nails attaching the spoke to the rim.
