Cobalt blue Fruit Bowl

This is a Fruit bowl. It was designed by Michael Powolny and manufactured by J. & L. Lobmeyr GmbH and Loetz-Witwe.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from J. & L. Lobmeyr GmbH as part of the The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s and Making Design exhibitions.

It is dated 1918 and we acquired it in 2009. Its medium is mold and mouth-blown blue-green "sapphire" glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

While the Ambassador series, seen in clear glass on this shelf, favored Lobmeyr’s ultrathin “muslin” glass, Powolny’s ceramic work may have led him to explore thicker glass and color, as seen in his fruit bowl and tumbler.

It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Dale and Doug Anderson, Anonymous Donor, Arthur Liu, and Prairie Pictures, Inc. and from General Acquisitions Endowment Fund.
