Sample Book, Knoll Wall Collection

This is a Sample book. It was made by Knoll Textiles. It is dated 1986 and we acquired it in 2011. Its medium is woven fabric containing rayon, cotton, silk, polyester, linen, wool, nylon, and/or modacrylic. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

This sample book for the Knoll Wall Collection was introduced in 1986. It includes the original six designs from Knoll’s first collection of woven wallcoverings from 1984, along with four new designs. Each of the designs is shown in multiple colorways for a total of 53 samples. The sample book includes three designs by Jhane Barnes, who began working with Knoll Textiles in 1982. These are the first wallcoverings designed by Barnes for Knoll, and also the first Knoll wallcoverings by a named designer.
This sample book illustrates Knoll’s early contribution to the field of wallcoverings. This significant book relates to pieces in the museum’s collection; at the time of proposed acquisition, wallcoverings designed by Barnes are the earliest examples of her work in the museum’s collection. Sample books are a particular strength of the museum’s wallcoverings collection and the addition of this book would continue to broaden our holdings and fortify interdepartmental connections.
