This is a Model of a Carriage. It is dated 1860–90 and we acquired it in 2014. Its medium is carved, cut, and painted wood and wrought iron, sheet glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The hansom cab is a type of horse-drawn carriage designed by British architect Joseph Hansom. These cabs quickly gained favor as they were fast, could be pulled by a single horse, and were agile enough to maneuver around congestion in dense urban areas. Hansom cabs served as taxis in New York City, providing transportation that was easier and faster than driving oneself or walking.
