A decorative and elegant black iron firescreen with numerous, stylized curling tendrils in varying sizes contained within a rectilinear double border; at center, brilliant, golden gilt leaves surround a nude figure holding a swag-like drape, smaller gilt tendrils, and a ring of gilt pearls. Gilt leaves accent the larger panel as if fallen from a tree onto the curling tendrils at irregular intervals; they are shaped simply in an almond-like motif. The interior border is etched with spaced lines; the exterior border is smooth. The firescreen is held upright with two rectangular footings, spaced and perpendicular to the screen itself.

Firescreen

This is a Firescreen. It was designed by Edgar Brandt. It is dated ca. 1925. Its medium is wrought iron and gilding.

The use of a gilded figure reminiscent of Paris-based American dancer Isadora Duncan amidst a foliate ground in Edgar Brandt’s fire screen of about 1925 recalls similar patterning in Viennese design of a decade earlier.

It is credited Lent by The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Museum purchase funded by the Design Council, 2001, 2001.257.

Wrought iron rectilinear door with carved and pierced flowers, leaves and vines. The designs have reference to Persian manuscript sources as well as contemporary textile designs of the 1920’s. The later addition of feet made it able to stand-alone.

A wrought iron stand the size of a fireplace.See through in the middle, the iron is decorated into a repeated grid pattern of made of a square of curls with textured squares within the curls in the middle. Surrounded by a solid thick frame, it has an overall shape of a square refelecting the decorative motif. At the top two corners are two stylized creatures, with two curls on either side of each head. The two bottom feet look like two elongated, stylized feet.
