Stein is known for her jewelry made using plastic and combined in innovative ways. She trained as an artist as a young girl and worked in the textile industry starting in 1957, and by 1965 she was working with her chemist husband, Ferdinand Steinberger, to develop a process of layering thin sheets of plastic to make the multi-colored and textured plastics for which she is known. Her jewelry is made in two periods, as she stopped producing for a time: 1969 – 1981 and 1991 to the present.

A seemingly seven layered bangle bracelet with a repeated cross motif layered creating a radiating cross shape with a seperate background color..A pattern emerges of red-orange, light pink and light blue, however,each cross varies in color, either red, red-orange, light blue, light pink and surrounded by white space. The interior of the bangle has streaks of all the colors in various patterns.
