Textile, Spindrift

This is a Textile. It was designed by Joe Richards and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1953 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Joe Richards, the photorealist painter of train engines and agricultural machinery, broke with his usual industrial subjects to create this lighthearted textile. In Spindrift, footprints form dizzying paths around sections of driftwood on a sandy background.
Richards’ change of pace appealed to Esquire, which featured illustrations of a trio of beachwear styles, ostensibly for the whole family, designed by California Casualaire in its April 1954 issue. A length of Spindrift also appears draped in the background of a Signature Fabrics advertisement in Vogue Pattern Book (February-March 1954). (1)
This design in this colorway is currently represented in the museum’s collection (1994-38-6).
