This is a Drawing. We acquired it in 1931. Its medium is black chalk, pen and black ink, brush and watercolor on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Artist Saverio della Gatta depicted many Italian landscapes and Neapolitan scenes of everyday life. In this watercolor, he shows a group of elite travelers journeying by sedan chair, which is supported by a caravan of horses. Through the glass windows, the fashionable couple enjoys the view of a smoking Mount Vesuvius, distant mountains, and architectural ruins.

This object was donated by Eleanor Garnier Hewitt.
