Border (Italy), mid-16th century

This is a Border. It is dated mid-16th century and we acquired it in 1971. Its medium is silk on linen and its technique is selected warps and wefts of the linen plain weave fabric wtihdrawn, leaving a 1/16 of an inch square grid for needlework; natural linen darned into solid pattern areas; red silk wrapped around the grid and pulled tight for an openwork background. It is a part of the Textiles Department department.
