This is a Matchsafe. It is dated ca. 1890 and we acquired it in 1978. Its medium is cast and engraved silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Its dimensions are

7.8 x 3.7 x 3 cm (3 1/16 x 1 7/16 x 1 3/16 in. )

It has the following markings

"STERLING" stamped on outside, just below and slightly to the side of smallest or pinkie finger. "STERLING" also stamped on bezel.
