Excelsior Platter, ca. 1880

This is a Platter. It was manufactured by Old Hall Earthenware Co., Ltd.. It is dated ca. 1880 and we acquired it in 1999. Its medium is glazed earthenware with transfer-printed decoration. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

The Old Hall Earthenware Company specialized in artistic designs for transfer-printed decoration onto earthenware and attracted the collaboration of the commercially minded Christopher Dresser. The abstraction, asymmetry, and medallions here show Japanese inspiration in motif and composition.

It is credited Gift of the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Paul F. Walter Collection.
