St. Thomas or St. Matthew Spoon, ca. 1661

This is a Spoon. It is dated ca. 1661 and we acquired it in 2006. Its medium is parcel gilt silver. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was purchased from S.J. Shrubsole and purchased with funds from: Joseph Holtzman. It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Joseph Holtzman and from General Acquisitions Endowment Fund.

Its dimensions are

L x W: 18.6 x 4.9 cm (7 5/16 x 1 15/16 in.)

It has the following markings

On spoon bowl: Exeter town mark of mid 17th century.

It is inscribed

Later (probably late 18th century) engraved "A. D. H." in Roman block letters on handle near bowl; the back of the bowl with original pricked initials "IF/F" above the date "1661".
