Jerry Fels founded Matisse, Ltd. as a subsidiary of his jewelry firm Renoir of California in 1952. The Matisse, Ltd. line included inserts and placquettes of enameled color. Many of the designs were in line with recognizable forms and colors in abstract art, as referenced in the company name of Matisse.
