The present view occupies the full page. Dark outlines prevail. The eyebrows are formed by lines slanting upward over raised eyes. The lips are closed and cheekbones heavily shaded, contributing to the forbidding, even hostile, expression. Wavy, unkempt hair frames the face.

Recto: Numerals 1-12 are imprinted in bold black type in a row across the center at one inch intervals. Across the top and bottom, rows of vertical lines indicate measurements in inches and metrical equivalents. Accompanying these markings at various intervals (0-1, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6) are measurements imprinted in small type. Further markings in the center row are Made in England (1-2); Standard at 20 C (2-3); M&Co (6-7); 1 inch = 25.4mm (9-10); 1 meter = 39.37 in.; time = money (11-12); and an icon, unidentified (5-6). A hole is incised between the numeral 12 and the right edge, which is curved.

Verso: What appears to be a fingerprint is illustrated just next to the left edge. Line illustrations comprise the remaining space across to the right edge: astronomical symbols immediately to the right of the fingerprint and again between the light bulb and cake on the right; a curved line interrupted by the M of M&Co; a graph with numbers at the top and right side; frontal nude figures of a man grasping an unidentified object in his upraised right hand, and next to him a woman; to their right, a rotary telephone, its curled cord stretched out behind the couple; a light bulb surrounded by short lines signifying that it is turned on; a curved line, meant to seem to continue the earlier one, ending in a slice of layer cake on a plate.

The present object, here flattened, in actual use would be affixed to a jar and viewed in the round, so that the far left and right partial spiral icons would form whole spirals. Three lines of horizontal type, Silver/ Bennetts/ Polish, are designed to be read vertically. Silver and polish are imprinted in the designer's hand-lettered style capitals in silver on black bands, while Bennetts is imprinted in stencil-style capitals in black on a narrower silver band. The spiral icons appear on the two black bands between the repeats of silver and polish. A blank narrow silver band at the top and a wider one at the bottom, imprinted with two lines of small sans-serif black type regarding instructions in the use of the polish, complete the design.

Jacket: The box-shaped jacket is constructed of coated black, marbleized stock and is notched in the center of the open edges. There is an incised outline of an oval in the center, top side.

Book, front and back covers: Dark green cloth; spine bound in black cloth, extending about two inches each onto front and back.

Front cover: Imprinted A/ fable in metallic gold, sans serif-style type. Just underneath, positioned to be viewed through the oval of the jacket, is an outline, also in gold, of a hand, extended to the right, palm facing the viewer, thumb up;

Spine: With the object laid flat and front cover down, A fable is imprinted in gold in the same type as on the front, accompanied on either side by thin gold lines, gradually narrowing from the center outward. With the object standing, imprinting at the bottom edge, also in gold, reads M&Co/ Vol2.

Inside front cover: On the left, comprising about one third of the page width, is an engraved nature scene composed of trees, rocks, and sailboats afloat. The remaining space features a fictional narrative in mock-Italian English, with the initial letter O in white-outlined black superimposed on the right edge of the view, and the remainder imprinted on white in double-spaced serif-styled type. Within the surrounding black border, in miniature white upper case sans serif-style type, is a quotation beginning on the top and continuing on all sides; the author is identified as Pliny the Younger.

Right: A flap extending from the inside front cover, and of the same width as the engraving on the left, continues the established design format with a small engraved view at the top and a quotation imprinted within the border on the left, right and bottom sides; the author is identified as Virginia Woolf. Three paragraphs describing the putative origin of the Scissors-Paper-Rock game in the present narrative are interspersed with three ideograms illustrating the hand positions of the game. Buona Fortuna! is imprinted in miniscule capitals directly below the third hand; underneath, an eleven line quotation from Sir Isaac Newton completes the flap design.

The flap serves as a cover to a pair of silver-colored metal scissors, engraved M&Co/ New York on one side and Italy on the reverse, and a smooth, dark gray, veined rock. Each is placed in a discrete pocket incised in a stack of blank white paper pages, the scissors followed underneath by the rock. A perforated vertical line separates the scissors/rock section from the remainder of the stack to the right.
