Shield-shaped dress clip comprised of ninety-two brilliant-cut glass rhinestones and nie baguette-cut rhinestones encased in a visible rhodium plated base metal (a less expensive member of the platinum family).

This clip (and it's mate 1997-146-7) are symmetrical, monochromatic and characteristic of the geometric Art Deco style and 'white jewelry' trend sof the 1930s.

Oblong, right side rounded, left side formed to resemble top of alligator's head, upper edge resembling alligator's back, featuring raised decoration of architectural monument, inscribed "Old City Gates, St. Augustine, Fla." beneath, surrounded by raised form of alligator, whose tail wraps down and around curved right side of box. Reverse features raised decoration of monument, inscribed "Old Fort Marion, St. Augustine, Fla." beneath. Top of alligator's head flips open at jaw line as box lid. Raised scales on alligator's back likely intended as striker.

Lower side panel inscribed "United We Stand," upper side panel inscribed "Divide and We Fall." Reverse inscribed "This label should be pasted on every package containing Beer, Ale, or Porter, as the only guarantee that said package contains beverages produced by Union Labor." Central reserve features facimile of red label, featuring blue coat of arms flanked by inscription "UNION" and "BEER", the rest inscribed "National Union of the United Brewery Workmen of the United States." Oblong, with ornate curved sides, cinched where lid meets box body, featuring raised horizontal decoration depicting large pavillion-like building, inscribed "St. Louis 1904" above architectural rendering, and "Palace of Electricity" below. Inscribed on lid, and legible when box is turned long side up is "World's Fair", all decoration framed by winding, sinuous, fabric-like band that wraps around perimeter of box. Reverse features raised decoration of woman, seated in garden setting, dressed in long, Classical-style garment, drying her hair, probably based on figure of Venus, behind her is statue of a similar theme, all framed by c-curves and counter-curves. Lid hinged on upper, long side. Striker on bottom.

Oblong, with rounded corners, featuring central, raised decoration of two donkey heads, each facing the other, between them is inscription "Three Of A Kind", all framed by twisted ropework. Plain case lid flips open at left of decoration by pressing small metal button on top, upper left. At right is plain slip-off cover that conceals pair of miniature dice. Reverse features raised decoration of delicate arabesques surrounding a central, empty, oval reserve that is framed with ropework, all reverse ornament framed again with twisted ropework. Striker is on bottom of slip-off cover.

The flat, unadorned, reverse side displays a ruler stamped into the metal on the upper edge, with measurements up to approximately 2 1/2 inches across. In the form of a rolled and wrapped copy of Scientific American, front of the wrapper enameled with a New York, 1896 postmark and a blue one cent stamp, the reverse enameled with 3 red dots to simulate sealing wax. Wrapper inscribed "Mr. Fred Smyth, 15 West 46th St." Lid (left end of rolled paper) hinged on long, bottom edge. Both left and right ends, where paper appears to be coiled in a roll, likely also intended as strikers.
