Search Results

A palampore or tent hanging with a center field and border. The field is dominated by a tall, straight, slender palm (possibly date?) rising from a mound, with a full crown of feathery foliage and fruit clusters. From lower on the trunk spring, at one side, a small palm head, bending gracefully, and from the other side a down-curving branch of blossoms. From the mound grows a slender flowering vine, which divides and winds upward, forming a frame for the tree's head.
Small flowering trees grow from either corner of the mound; to the left of the palm is a short rugged tree, bamboo shoots grow close to the trunk of the palm, and to the right stands a handsome peacock. The trunk of the palm is marked with an eliptical pattern, and its roots are exposed.
The border, 15 inches wide, is a repeating pattern of short trees, and in each corner, a small bamboo tree. The rows of little trees grow from a curving ground line, suggesting mounds.
In two reds, blue, green, red-violet, yellow (now much faded) and red-brown outlines on an off-white ground, without seam. Lined with cotton.

From a large mound, painted in shades of red, brown and black, rises a cluster of eight bamboos, which branch toward the sides and top. Bamboos are twined with vines bearing flowers. From the corners of mound grow flowering trees in branches of which parakeets and squirrels disport themselves. The bamboo trunks are alternately red and brown. Most of flowers in shades of red except for a few large blossoms which are white, with veins of black, but tree trunks at sides are brown and foliage yellow-ish brown with dark brown veins. In upper branches, several large birds in black and brown, identified as babblers, and the parakeets are red, with tails in light and dark brown. In the mound, which is painted in detail in conventionalized paints and curves to suggest hillocks, ar eseveral large blossoms in red, one in browns, and groups of animals (deer?) in red.
The entire background is painted with a minute feathery pattern of foliage in a light yellowish-brown.
A border, 17 1/2 inches wide, in formal design of flower garlands and ribbons, edges the entire quilt, except lower corners, left and right, where it has been cut away to fit a bed. Originally the border was painted in one with the main design, as seen at the bottom, but the cover has been shortened at top, thus clipping off the tips of the bamboos, and cut into at the sides. Where these alterations have taken place the border is sewn by hand to the body of the quilt.
Colors: two reds, dark and light brown, pale yellow-brown; remains of light blue in a few large flowers and a few border flowers, black.

A field exhibiting three date palms with feathery heads, one crossing stem of the tallest and a border of a flowering vine. The palms rise from a mound or hillocks naturalistically rendered and shades in red, green, brown and some purple and yellow. Small bamboos riese from its corners. The trunks of the palms are purple, outlined in black, and they show a scaly or imbricated surface. Vines with red stems creep up around the palm bearing small flowers in red, violet, and other colors which fill the background. A very narrow border divides the main field from a border about ten inches wide decorated with curving vine, like bamboo, with red and green leaves, fruits and flowers. A wide border, about seventeen inches, at sides and eight inches at the bottom have been added and are European, probably French, block printed coton on a deep cream ground. Flowers are small, in shades of red, blue, green and brown in typical, small flower patterns of block printing from the second half of the eighteenth century. The quilt is lined with a rather coarse material, probably heavy linen, block printed in large scale designs of large red flower and meander on broken black ground. The material in unbleached and is in three and half breadths. The additions were made in Europe, France probably, and quilted. The quilting line crossing the palampore and the added French border. The stuffing is cotton.

The wide border, contained between two narrow guard borders with pattern of delicate flowering vine, exhibits a design of five types of palm trees – the Palmyra palm, banana, coconut, betel, and date palms – growing in a row, and forming a repeat pattern. On the ground appear a mongoose, a lamb, and shaggy gray dog wearing a collar. Several of the trees variously inhabited: the coconut palm is being ascended by the "toddy" man, equipped with ladder, sack and other tools, to gather the fluid which will make the "toddy" wine. A parakeet with red body and green tail clings to the trunk of a banana palm; a cobra is coiled round the trunk of the date palm, reaching toward birds which flutter about their nest; brown squirrels are busy on the trunk of the betel palm. The palm trunks are in red, or brown, or blue with red and blue foliage. Colors are two reds, two greens, blue, yellow, violet, and brown. Cotton is very fine, now a biscuit color, and glazed.

Half of a palampore with a tree trunk in brilliant light red rises from a mound and curves heavily right before branching toward the top. Various flowers in brilliant red and dull violet with leaves in two shades of blue with red accents appear. Vestiges of yellow remain in leaves of small flower clusters. To left of the curved trunk appears a half medallion formed from ribbon knots and flowers framing a cluster of roses. The mound is comprised of pointed hillocks in reds, blues, and browns with much shading. A pheasant in many colors is perched on a short plant rising from the mound, and a small flowering tree is at the right end. Birds in branches are babblers. Finishing the right side and top, a border about twelve inches wide is composed of narrow festoons of ribbon and small flower clusters, and an outer festoon simulating a pale rose-colored ribbon with flower clusters at each curve in reds, blue, and pale violet. A narrow band of red is painted along the edge at the right side and across the top.
