Long vertical length of red damask has symmetrical broad scrolling bands with acanthus foliage curling about them. Palmette between bands is at top. In center is a single large figure of Pope Gregory the Great (ca. 540–604), wearing the papal tiara, his right hand raised in benediction, and holding a crozier of a double cross in his left hand. A dove, an attribute of Gregory, hovers close to his right ear. The figure of the Pope is brocaded in white silk, and silver and gold metallic threads. Beneath the Pope is a large-scale floral design.
