This is a drawing. It is dated ca. 1750 and we acquired it in 1901. Its medium is pen and brown ink on laid paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Though coaches appeared in 17th-century Europe, they grew more widespread in the 18th century as newly created roads expanded possible traffic. Coaches provided comfort, protection, and safety to travelers, and many featured ornate decoration. This highly ornamented coach design would have served an elite voyager.
