Trompe l'Oeil Étui étui
This is a étui. It was manufactured by Unknown. It is dated mid- to late-18th century and we acquired it in 1931. Its medium is porcelain, vitreous enamel, gold, metal. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
Along with scent bottles and snuff boxes, etui were among the small personal objects that fell under the eighteenth-century trade category of “toys”. Etui are small decorative cases used to hold toiletry items and sewing tools. This example in the form of a naturalistically painted asparagus stalk was part of a broader trend for trompe-l’oeil ceramics. Especially fashionable were tureens made to resemble the animals or plants diners were soon to consume.
