Print, Plate 16, from Livre de bijouterie (Book of Designs for Goldsmiths and Jewelers)
This is a Print. It was after Léonard Thiry and Rosso Fiorentino and engraved by René Boyvin and published by Paul de la Houve. It is dated ca. 1570 and we acquired it in 1956. Its medium is engraving on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
Boyvin’s engraved designs for rings and linked chains served as models for jewelers and goldsmiths, who could show them to clients to select styles to be produced. The hefty designs were inspired by the work of Fiorentino, whose work at Fountainbleau in the 1530s helped to expand the influence of the grotesque outside of Italy.
It is credited Museum purchase through gift of Eleanor and Sarah Hewitt.
