Sidewall, Indian

This is a sidewall. It was created by Morris & Co. and designed by William Morris. It is dated 1863–70 and we acquired it in 1941. Its medium is block-printed on paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

It is inscribed

"Indian" is an adaptation that William Morris made from Indian designs. It was probably inspired by a Coromandel painted cotton bedspread or a Gujerate embroidered coverlet or tablecover. Printing of this pattern requires four woodblocks.
