Flag Cane

This is a Cane. It is dated ca. 1890 and we acquired it in 1987. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Most popular in European markets, the decorative cane has been a fashionable accessory for centuries, acting as a status symbol among the wealthy. Such canes were typically decorated in a variety of media, ranging from lacquer to precious metals, though this example is comparatively modest. However, the top knob pulls up to reveal an American flag hidden within the outer case.
