Textile, Capitals

This is a Textile. It is dated 1950–59 and we acquired it in 1995. Its medium is cotton and its technique is screen printed on plain weave with overtwisted yarns. It is a part of the Textiles department.

It is credited Museum purchase from General Acquisitions Endowment Funds.

Here, this mount is a wood block in the form of a pilaster capital or column top. It is fully symmetrical and finished with gilt bronze mounts and has intricate leaf and flower shading. The capital is an Ionic shape, with two scrolls made of prominent, framing outlines on either side, relief carvings of leaves arranged like a curtain at the top, and flower rosettes framed by horizontal parallel lines at the bottom. Above that, elongated, vertical leaves are situated on tongue-like shapes that curl at the ends and alternate with thin-stemmed flowers. Between the two volute scrolls is an egg-shape cut in half and crowned with an acanthus leaf triad, whose curving and outstretched stem follows above the volutes, and curves inward with the scroll's framing curls. Closed buds from the ancanthus leaves have unfurling leaf triads emerging and lie in front of flanking egg shapes on etiher side of the center egg. In the center of the volute's spiral is a five-petaled flower rosette, preceded by decorative beading decreasing in size. All of these elements protrude from the capital in intricately carved decoration.
