Chocolate Pitcher (Germany)
This is a Chocolate pitcher. It was manufactured by C.A. Lehman & Sohn. It is dated 1920–40 and we acquired it in 1996. Its medium is glazed earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.
In the interwar years, democratic ideals and new modes of production made German ceramics more widely available. Machines to shape, press, and mold clay allowed for faster manufacturing and lower prices. Shapes and ornament were both simplified and pieces were sold individually rather than as sets. As seen on this chocolate pitcher, potters experimented with air-brushing techniques, applying geometric designs inspired by the Bauhaus, European avant-garde arts, and Art Deco.
