In 2006 Philippe Apeloig designed a poster for an installation of his posters at Espace Topographie de l’Art in Paris, entitled Vivo in Typo. A group of nineteen preparatory drawings and prints document Apeloig’s design process for creating Vivo in Typo, documenting the evolution of this poster design. Apeloig’s compositional studies are worked out in pen and ink by hand. On one of these sheets, he also jots down his thoughts for the matrix (foundational elements) out of which the poster will be created. The matrix is composed of different punctuation marks-- dashes, semicolons, and vertical bars. The digital prints highlight moments in the designer’s computer process. Using the computer, Apeloig or a member of his studio built up layers of markings, applying different kernings or adjustments to the spacing of individual letter forms and then laid these examples one on top of another.
