William Whitaker & Sons, Inc.
William Whitaker & Sons is one of the oldest Philadelphia textile mills. It was established in 1813 by Henry Whitaker. He had first opened a firm in Rochdale, England, in 1796. He then visited the United States in 1807, which encourage him to relocated his business in Hudson, N.Y. in 1809. He eventually built a waterwheel textile factory in Cedar Grove along Tacony Creek, in the Philadelphia area. Henry Whitaker eventually resigned in 1822 and gave the company to his two sons Robert and William. The company’s records showed sixty-eight workers in 1840.
