Hilke Schaer started her career at Creation Baumann as a designer of upholstery and printed and woven fabric after studying textile design in Hannover. Early in her career as a textile designer she worked for several other notable companies including Weverij de Ploeg in The Netherlands and Rohleder in Germany. She later was employed by auto maker BMW as a designer of color and trim, and then promoted to head of design for advanced materials and color. Schaer continues to work at BMW and gives lectures on color and material design at Fachhochschule Joanneum in Graz.
