Brandford received her MA in Desing in 1967 from the University of California, Berkeley. She was most interested in North, Central, and Andean American textiles. She was inspired by these to produce unique designs in sculptural forms to composed of natural materials, which she sometimes dyed. In the 1970s and 80s, she curated exhibitions and catalogued collections of American Indian baskets.
