Born in Oels, Niedernschlesien, now Olesnicka, Germany on 13 February, 1941. Education: studied glass-painting at Düsseldorf-Kaiserwerth, 1959-60; at Staatliche Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf 1961-67 under Gerald hoehme, Karl Otto Goetz, and Joseph Beuys. Founder with Konrad Fischer-Lueg and Gerhard Richter, "Captialist Realist" painting group, Düsseldorf 1963. Works under this movement focus on consumerism. For example, Polke illustrate food in storage that were very difficult to obtain in East Germany. Guest instructor 1970-1971 and Professor since 1977 at Akademie der bildenden Kunste, Hamburg. Recipient: Painting Prize, Bienal Sao Paulo 1975.
