Christa C. Mayer Thurman (b. 1934) was Assistant Curator of Textiles at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum from 1961 – 1967. She left New York to take a position at the Art Institute of Chicago, where she remained for 42 years, eventually earning the title of Chair and Curator of the Department of Textiles. During her career Thurman curated more than 80 exhibitions at the Art Institute, including Masterpieces of Western textiles from the Art Institute of Chicago (1969), Claire Zeisler a Retrospective (1979), and Raiment For The Lord's Service: A Thousand Years of Western Vestments (1975), and contributed to many scholarly publications, including Design in America: The Cranbrook Vision, 1925-1940, for which she received the Charles F. Montgomery Prize. Thurman retired in 2009, and in 2010 was honored as Emerita.
