Derek Watkins clarifies complex topics with design and code, often through original reporting and interactive data visualization. He worked for The New York Times from 2012 to 2021, where he created whimsical live illustrations of Olympic races, measured pollution in New Delhi, surveyed hurricane damage with drones, and visualized the early spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Much of his work is focused on how interactions between people and their environment shape the world. He has a master's degree in geography from the University of Oregon.
