Kirkall is noted as a printmaker for his successful combinations of printing methods, such as woodcut with mezzotint. He reproduced Raphael's tapestry cartoons and paintings by Willem van de Velde II using a mixture of etching and mezzotint with a chiaroscuro block. He also combined etching, mezzotint, and relief printing from pewter plates in a series of 12 prints (1722-1724) after Italian drawings in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire.
