Box - Recto: Against a background of lavender sky with white and yellow puffy clouds are several rows of reddish-golden-haired angels in similar pale tones, elbows bent and hands folded in prayer under the chin, eyes turned toward the center and focused on a cartoon-like line illustration of a white and black dog. The dog, smiling, is seated on a red-cushioned wooden-framed throne topped by cone-shaped finials. David Byrne in Old English purple type appears on two lines above the angel grouping; uh-oh is imprinted in small, thick lower-case black type below the throne. A small chartreuse rectangle, outlined in black, is situated on a slant just above the center at the right, and is imprinted in capital letters This is Garbage./ followed by, in upper and lower case (This box, that is.) The/ American record business/ insists on it, though. If you/ agree that it's wasteful, let/ your store management/ know how you feel.
Verso: From the top edge, extending about two thirds down, there is a photograph of a sunset, the sky and clouds in predominantly red and orange tones and the sun, bottom center, in bright white. The musical numbers are imprinted in black capitals in a vertical column on the left. In the lower third, on a chartreuse background, the design continues in the form of a pre-printed postcard, pre-addressed to the United States Senate, protesting the use of cardboard cd packaging of the present type. Within a narrow horizontal band separating the two parts of the design, is a message in miniature white capitals directing consumers to sign and return the postcard, first filling in the name of the signatory's senator.

When unfolded, seven panels are revealed in a step layout; four panels on each side are comprised of partial photographic views of well-known buildings (e.g., the Eiffel Tower, Empire State, and Chrysler) in blue-gray tones within white borders. The building dates, imprinted in red italicized type, are centered within the top borders. One of the views, featuring One Liberty Place, is dated December 12, 1986, the completion date. The three remaining panels are all related to the invitational event celebrating the topping off and again use red italicized type: the adjacent panel (to the right) consists of eight lines of type, six in the top half and two just above the bottom edge; the adjacent panel (immediately above) shows a color photographic view of fireworks in predominantly pink tones; and the reverse of the fireworks view displays One Liberty Place centered at the top and four additional lines of type centered just above the bottom edge.

Recto: The information in this invitation to a benefit performance of the film, Something Wild, is imprinted in a continuing narrative in black and red on a white ground, in the following order: Row 1, #1: five lines; row 2, #2, five lines; row 1, #3, seven lines. The alternate four rectangles consist of a scratch pattern of thick black lines. The second word of the film title, wild, is imprinted in bold red letters, superimposed unevenly on all eight rectangles.

Verso: When opened, row 2 becomes row 1, and the #4 rectangle is now #1, in an upside-down position. When right side up, it shows a sketched illustration of a guest check against a black scratch pattern. Row 1, #2, consisting of a pair of handcuffs and #4, of a dagger, also on the scratch pattern ground, refer to the film's story. Recto: With the card in a vertical direction, the design consists of an image of an engraving of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France from 1774-1793, based on a contemporaneous engraving. Her gaze is focussed directly on the viewer and she appears to be smiling. Her bouffant wig is styled off-the-face in a pompadour and has curls cascading onto the sides of her neck. The ornamentation comprises a feather-and-jewel object entwined in the top of the hair; teardrop earrings; a necklace of a single strand of pearls, perhaps encircled by precious jewels; and in the center, just below the bustline, a brooch of round stones from which three teardrop jewels are suspended. The dress, cut off in the image above the waist, has what appear to be long sleeves, and an off-the shoulder neckline edged in a lace-trimmed scarf-like collar, knotted in the center, below which two vertical strips are superimposed, probably in a v-shape ending below the waist. Underneath the image, Marie Antoinette is imprinted in very small type; to the left of the M is a curved arrrow pointing to the image. A broken horizontal line extends from side to side across the neck, and close to the right edge, on the same line, is an illustration of an open pair of scissors.
Verso: The card is divided horizontally into message and addressee spaces, with a thin black line separating the two. With the card in a vertical direction, the message emphasizes Bastille Day in large black handwritten-styled letters; the remaining information in the same style, but much smaller, letters is imprinted both above, on one line, and below in a curved line, with three columns side by side underneath.
With the card in a horizontal direction, the rectangular stamp area on the upper right is occupied by an eighteenth century style straw basket with rope edging and handles. Post Card is on one line below, followed by three narrow lines underneath each other for addressee information.

Each card features, in black and white photographic reproduction, a variation on a pair of a man's hands, accompanied by a brief slogan about the real estate firm's particular business specialty, in small sans serif capitals.

1993-151-161a - Two hands, fingers extended downward and palms facing up, are placed left and right. Hair is visible just above the wrists, where the view is cut off. A folded one dollar bill, showing a United States Mint portrait reproduction of George Washington, appears, along with three coins, on top of the palm on the left, while an excerpt from a floor plan is on top of the palm on the right. Between the two hands, the sentence, In/ every/ real estate/ transaction/ there is/ a buyer/ and/ a seller, is imprinted. The phrase, real estate, is curved.

Recto: Occupying center space, with margins of about 20 cm (3/4 in.) top and bottom and 25 cm (1 1/8 in.) each side, is an image of a slice of iced three-layer cake on a round plate. A fork, holding a bite-size piece of cake, extends from the top of the slice on the right to the upper right-hand corner, where it is cut off in the handle area. The plate is decorated with a narrow black circle a short distance from the plate rim.

1993-151-170a - Envelope - A bright yellow window envelope, imprinted across the center in bold black capitals, Throw Away This Envelope, contains materials pitched to potential American readers of Granta magazine, founded in Great Britain.
On the top left is an icon of a cup and saucer, a curlicue of steam rising from the cup. Marketing copy, positioned above and below the central line of type, occupies the remaining space to the bottom edge.
1993-151-170d - Flyer - Cover page: The salutation to Dear Reader, in detached script letters on the top left, is followed by a thirteen line paragraph in serif style type about Granta. In the top half, abutting the right edge, is a map showing a partial view of Cambridge University. In the bottom half, on the diagonal, abutting the left edge, and continuing on the back page, is an excerpt from the cover of the Granta issue, Dirty Realism; the design, posing a couple against a background of neon signs, is a parody of the Grant Wood painting, American Gothic. Pages two and three feature a narrative associating Granta magazine with the Granta River in Cambridge, England, and continuing with highlights from past Granta issues. On page two, lower right, there is a black and white reproduction of the Dirty Realism issue cover, featuring a parody of the couple in the Grant Wood painting, American Gothic, posed against a background of neon signs. Recto: From the right to left edges, the five band members (see Verso below for details) are featured in an all over pattern of eight rows in various standing poses, imprinted in tones of red or black-and-white. The band's name, The Atlantics, is imprinted across in the second, fourth and sixth rows in sans serif type of the same height as the figures, which are displaced by the letters for the most part in those rows.

Verso: A sequence of five overlapping, black and white, partial head shot views, one of each band member, comprises the design. The subjects look directly at the viewer and are posed so that the facial components - eyes, noses, mouths, etc - are approximately on the same level. The musicians' names and functions are imprinted at different levels in red sans serif style capitals; from left to right, they are Paul Caruso/ Drums, Vocals; B. Wilkinson/ Bass Guitar, Vocals; Fred Pineau/ Lead Guitar; Tom Hauck/ Guitar, Vocals; and Bobby Marron/ Lead Vocals. The pattern is most discernible on the bottom right, where the leaves are dense and the light intensifies. The featured song lyrics (perhaps one stanza) are superimposed on the entire page; the titular line, Talking Heads (Nothing But) Flowers, is imprinted in yellow serif-style capitals, except for Nothing But, which is in upper and lower case type. The remaining twenty-two lines are imprinted in the same style, all capitals in a muddy pale green.

Verso - Additional song lyrics, organized in twenty-five lines of upper and lower case serif-style type, are imprinted top to bottom on a light olive green background, about one third of the page width. The remaining two thirds of the page feature a yellow background. In the central third of the page, in a curved format, is a list of the personnel of the titular song and of the song reproduced on the record's second side, Ruby Dear, followed by production information, including Design by M&Co. The lower edges of three Formica (tm) rectangles are inserted in clear plastic jackets, covering about one-third of the rectangles and mounted in a row on white cardboard. Each rectangle has a hole punched near the top; two of three possible ideographic designs, one imprinted directly beneath the hole and the second just above the lower edge; and multiple lines of type in upper and lower case, with highlighted content capitalized. The three rectangles comprise an invitation to a Formica Corporation event: the leftmost, in a gold-mustard color, extends the invitation; the central, in dusty pink, specifies the venue; and the rightmost, in silver-green, describes the program, featuring Tibor Kalman, and calls for invitees to respond. The whole is enclosed in a white envelope.

Jacket: The box-shaped jacket is constructed of coated black, marbleized stock and is notched in the center of the open edges. There is an incised outline of an oval in the center, top side.

Book, front and back covers: Dark green cloth; spine bound in black cloth, extending about two inches each onto front and back.

Front cover: Imprinted A/ fable in metallic gold, sans serif-style type. Just underneath, positioned to be viewed through the oval of the jacket, is an outline, also in gold, of a hand, extended to the right, palm facing the viewer, thumb up;

Spine: With the object laid flat and front cover down, A fable is imprinted in gold in the same type as on the front, accompanied on either side by thin gold lines, gradually narrowing from the center outward. With the object standing, imprinting at the bottom edge, also in gold, reads M&Co/ Vol2.

Inside front cover: On the left, comprising about one third of the page width, is an engraved nature scene composed of trees, rocks, and sailboats afloat. The remaining space features a fictional narrative in mock-Italian English, with the initial letter O in white-outlined black superimposed on the right edge of the view, and the remainder imprinted on white in double-spaced serif-styled type. Within the surrounding black border, in miniature white upper case sans serif-style type, is a quotation beginning on the top and continuing on all sides; the author is identified as Pliny the Younger.

Right: A flap extending from the inside front cover, and of the same width as the engraving on the left, continues the established design format with a small engraved view at the top and a quotation imprinted within the border on the left, right and bottom sides; the author is identified as Virginia Woolf. Three paragraphs describing the putative origin of the Scissors-Paper-Rock game in the present narrative are interspersed with three ideograms illustrating the hand positions of the game. Buona Fortuna! is imprinted in miniscule capitals directly below the third hand; underneath, an eleven line quotation from Sir Isaac Newton completes the flap design.

The flap serves as a cover to a pair of silver-colored metal scissors, engraved M&Co/ New York on one side and Italy on the reverse, and a smooth, dark gray, veined rock. Each is placed in a discrete pocket incised in a stack of blank white paper pages, the scissors followed underneath by the rock. A perforated vertical line separates the scissors/rock section from the remainder of the stack to the right.
